Lehlohonolo Peega
Lehlohonolo Peega as a person who 1st studied towards a BA general (majoring in music sociology) at the University of South Africa and in 2016 went to the University of Witwatersrand for BMUs degree stands as a true example of musicking. Being a
multi-instrumentalist, musical instruments craftsman, composer, scholar, teacher and
musician of note, classifications are but a mere formality for him.
It is at Welcome Soweto School of Music that he first met the admirable intricacies of
Subject-Music and Music education and from this very school that he volunteered as
a teacher and player for more than 7years, teaching what he terms as “musics” of
the world.
His experiences are varied and vast, including a performance at Ntate Jonny
Mekoa’s memorial, sharing the stage with the likes of Bra Stompie Manana, Bra
Jonas Gwangwa, Mam’ Abigail Khubeka, Mara Louw, Malcolm Giyane, Ntate Don
Mathera to name a few. Peega has also performed with other greats like Mandla
Mlangeni, Vuyo Manige, Matchome Zango, Blk Thought Music and Kgafela oa
Magogodi in the group Marabele. His experience also includes performances at the
Orchestral Reeves, Ikhaya lodge with the marimba band Khay’ Afrika and also
worked with Rand Symphony Orchestra.
He is current work is mostly based on research and MMus studies and theatre, having
worked in productions like the 1st ever staging of Ngugi’s Devil on The Cross
(directed by Prince Lamla and Kgafela oa Magogodi), musical director the current Thaba Bosiu by the naledi award winner.
Peega is also a band leader of Abantu Band that premiered in Grahamstown Arts Festival and just recently performed at the 969 Festival, presented at the annual South African Society for Research in Music conference (2020) and Tumaini Festival in Malawi.
He is currently a recipient of the esteemed Mail & Guardian top 200 most influential
South Africans, Top 100 inside education shining stars and shortlisted for the position of Board member of the National Arts Council of South Africa.

Peega truly presents himself as an all-rounder in the field of the arts. The course
closest to his heart, is a charitable project known as MUSIC IS JOY where he is the founder and principal. MIJ is a program aimed at redressing the imbalances of our shared past by
advancing music education and subject music to the previously marginalised and
deprived.
